Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors

Board Resignation
The economist declared he would withdraw from public roles after House committee made public his regular communications with the financier

Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is leaving the board at OpenAI, just several days after a batch of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became public.

The economist stated in an announcement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have contributed, enthusiastic about the potential of the enterprise, and look forward tracking their progress".

The former Harvard president, who formerly presided over the Ivy League institution, announced on Monday that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his connections with Epstein.

Message Exchange

The recently released emails demonstrated that Summers exchanged messages with the financier until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 arrest for accused trafficking of young people.

In a separate statement, the technology organization said it accepted the economist's decision to resign.

"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he offered to the Board," the company stated.

Legislative Background

This announcement follows after both chambers of the legislative branch agreed on Tuesday to endorse a legislation that would mandate the US justice department to release its documents on the case.

The measure will subsequently proceed to the administration of President Trump for approval. He has said he plans to sign the measure, after reversing his position on the subject following objections from his supporters.

Email Contents

A batch of Epstein-related messages released by the Congressional committee recently included numerous high-profile figures in the financier's former circle, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those individuals.

The communications indicated that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with the billionaire often seeking to link the academic to prominent world leaders.

Personal Accountability

After the emails were made available with the wider community, Summers stated he accepted "full responsibility for my ill-advised choice to continue corresponding with the financier".

He added that he desired "to rebuild confidence and mend bonds with the individuals most important to me".

Previous Positions

Summers occupied leadership roles under party leaders; acting as economic leader under the former president, and as leader of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.

He headed Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and remains a faculty member there. When stating his withdrawal from public roles previously on Monday, he said he would persist with his teaching commitments.

Additional Consequences

Following the economist's announcement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning research organization in the capital where the professor was a senior fellow, announced that the economist was ceased to be affiliated with the institution.

Summers joined the board of OpenAI, which creates the language model, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its top executive the company leader.
